Environmentalists Protest Against New Power Plant
May 24th, 2011 - Posted in Mining NewsEnvironmentalists are determined to continue their protest against a new coal power-plant that is located at Latrobe Valley, as what has been reported in yahoo.com.
HRL, the mining company from Melbourne that will be financing the mining establishment got its permit to conduct or start with the mining in Friday. The mining factory worries and angers some of the protesters since it will be using gas from brown coal to produce electricity. This is foreseen to be harmful to the environment.
An estimated of 300 people have joined forces and conducted their protest at the front of State Parliament this afternoon, to show how they hate the mining project.
While some protesters were shouting their disgust for the project, some climb on the roof of the Windsor Hotel to hang their banners that are labeled with demands to stop the project.
Greenpeace leader Julian Vincent, said he and his group will force potential investors to abandon the project.
“We’re going to tell investors, super funds, bank, joint venture partners, whoever it may be, that this is a project, that if they get associated with, there’s going to be a massive community campaign all over them,” Vincent said.
Mark Wakeham that represents Environment Victoria said the company and the project can expect strong disapproval from the public.
“We are all absolutely united in the fact that we cannot tackle climate change if we are building new coal-fired power stations,” Wakeham stated.
This is not the first time environmentalists protest for an establishment of mining industry in an area.
