Toshiba submitted a bid for the construction of 1,000MW power plant at Negri Sembilan.

Japan’s biggest maker of of power generators for machinery, Toshiba, and the country’s biggest house for trading, Sumitomo Corp are said to have submitted their applications to join the bid for the construction of 1,000MW power plant that will be located at Negri Sembilan.

The person familiar with the project released the information through Business Times.

The project has an estimated cost that runs between US$1.2 billion and US$1.5 billion (RM3.59 billion and RM4.48 billion).

According to reports, Toshiba made a solo flight with its proposal to join in the bid since it can be remembered that the company’s bid to join the construction of the 1,000MW coal-fired power plant in Tanjung Bin, Johor, was turned down because its partner failed to meet the most of the technical requirements of the project.

The world’s number three largest manufacturer of power equipment, Alstom SA, is said to be the government’s choice in case the project in Tanjung Bin will be continued.

Other bidding companies include MMC Corp Bhd. The company has submitted a bid for the coal-fired power plant in which 51 percent is owned by Malakoff Corp Bhd as its subsidiary.

The plant that will be build in Negri Sembilan will be an extension of the 2,100MW power plant in Malakoff. According to sources, the list of the winning companies for the bid will be released in June 2011.
However, according to sources there is a possibility that the Japanese government will only allow one project, choosing between the project in Negri Sembilan and the project in Tanjong Bin.
The Negri Sembilan is an extension to Jimah Energy Ventures Sdn Bhd’s Jimah, a power plant that is located at Port Dickson. Jimah has got the contract of supplying electricity materials to Tenaga Nasional Bhd for 25 years. The deal was sealed through the Power Purchase Agreement.
